Does my voice ever leave my phone?

Articulance processes your speech on your device and never uploads it. There is no developer backend, analytics, tracking SDK or account. You control any recordings, images or messages you choose to export.

App Store downloads, browser links, support messages and destinations you choose for exports can use a network. Articulance never uploads your speech. We state it that precisely on purpose: a privacy claim has to be true in every state the app can reach. Details are in the privacy policy.

Are my recordings saved?

Rehearsal and Room answer recordings are kept on this phone by default, with a notice before your first recording under this setting. They are never uploaded or included in device backups. Turn off Keep audio for replay in Settings at any time; an existing off choice is preserved. With keeping off, rehearsal audio is deleted when its fresh report closes and Room answer audio is not saved. Kept recordings remain yours to replay or delete. Kept files are available in Files; exported copies are managed by the destination you choose. Warm-up audio is never saved.

Can I rehearse for something in particular?

Yes — name it. “Board pitch, Friday.” Every take you give for it collects under that name: the report says which take this was, Sessions groups them together, and the coaching compares this one with the take before rather than with nothing.

Once the day has passed there is a run-up: how many takes you gave, across how many days, and what changed between your first and your last — including, if you rehearsed against a script, exactly which words you added, dropped or swapped. Facts, in the past tense. There is no countdown, no target and nothing you can fail; the app has never sent a notification and this did not change that.

Why does it not give me a score?

Because a score would be a lie with a number attached. There is no correct pitch, no correct speaking rate and no correct amount of pause — those are properties of a person, a room and a sentence, not a leaderboard. Every comparison Articulance makes is against your own earlier rehearsals. You will not find a grade, a percentile, a cohort, a streak you can lose or a badge anywhere in it.

Is there a subscription or in-app purchases?

No. Articulance is a one-time purchase on the App Store, and everything is included: unlimited rehearsals, every measurement, the live read, the full report with its receipts and playback, your whole history and trends, The Room, scripts and the live teleprompter, "Say it again" re-take drills, the executive debrief and keeping recordings on the device. Nothing renews, nothing is metered, and there is no account.

Why are the first three rehearsals "calibration"?

Because the app has nothing to compare you against until it has heard you a few times. It measures everything from the first take; it just will not tell you that something is "above your usual" until it knows what your usual is. Baselines are kept per microphone family, so switching from the built-in mic to AirPods starts a fresh count for that family.

Can I use it with AirPods or a wired mic?

Yes — there is a microphone picker on the Rehearse screen. Baselines are kept separate per microphone family, and a few loudness-derived measurements are honestly declined on anything but the built-in mic, because a headset three centimetres from your mouth measures loudness differently from a phone on the table. Pace, pitch, pauses and the word measurements are unaffected.

What languages does it work in?

The word-level measurements — filled pauses, hedges, emphasis, script comparison — are English only, and the app declines them explicitly rather than reporting confident nonsense if you speak something else. The acoustic measurements do not care what language you speak: pace, pitch, level, pauses, breathing and phrasing measure sound rather than vocabulary.

How accurate is the filled-pause count?

Better than a transcript alone, and we are candid that it is not perfect. On-device speech recognition drops most real hesitations — a genuine "uhh" is elongated, low-energy and messy, and often comes back transcribed as no word at all. So Articulance also detects them acoustically, from voiced sound the transcriber found no word for, and the two instruments together catch far more than either alone. It is evidence to listen against, not a certified count.

What happens if the app crashes mid-rehearsal?

Articulance checkpoints a rehearsal while the microphone is open. On relaunch it attempts to recover the last readable checkpoint and repair unfinished audio. The last unsaved interval may be missing, and recovery needs a readable checkpoint and enough storage. Interviews in The Room are saved when you end them; an interview interrupted before that is not kept.

Does it work offline, and on a plane?

Recording, acoustic measurements, report notes, history and saved playback run locally. Speech transcription and model features also require their Apple on-device assets to be installed first. If unavailable, acoustic capture continues and the app explains which text or question features are unavailable.

Can I use it to assess someone else?

Please do not. Articulance is built for one person practising against their own past — it produces no score, has never been validated as an assessment instrument, and using it to screen, rank or evaluate anybody would be a misuse of it. See the terms of use.

Is it a medical or clinical tool?

No. It is not a medical device and nothing in it is a diagnosis. If you have a concern about your voice or your speech, see a laryngologist or a speech-language pathologist.

Which devices does it need?

iPhone or iPad running iOS 26.0 or later. Report notes are written from local templates and your measured evidence. The Room and optional debrief can use Apple Intelligence where supported; otherwise the Room uses a fixed question bank. The measurements do not depend on that model.

How do I delete everything?

Settings → Delete all sessions removes rehearsals, re-take drills and their audio. Interviews, warm-ups and scripts are kept. Delete interviews in Sessions, and warm-ups from their records in the warm-up archive. Deleting the app removes its local data but does not erase an existing device backup or copies you exported.
