Getting started

1. Tap record and talk. There is nothing to configure. Say what you would actually say — a minute is plenty for a first take.
2. Read the report. Drag along the drawing at the top to move through the rehearsal. Every coaching note below it has a timestamp; tap it to hear the moment it is describing.
3. Do it twice more. The first three rehearsals are spent calibrating, because every comparison in the app is against your own past sessions. The app tells you how many are left.

"It says it is still calibrating"

That is expected, and it is honest rather than coy. Articulance never compares you with other people, so until it has a few of your own rehearsals it has nothing to compare this one against. Everything is still measured and shown in the meantime — only the "compared with your usual" lines wait. Three rehearsals on the same microphone is the threshold; the presence indices need five.

A measurement is missing, or says "not measured"

The app refuses a measurement rather than guessing at one, and it tells you which reason applies:

• "Not enough voice yet" — the take was too short, or too little of it was voiced, for that particular detector to have anything to work with.
• "None heard in this take" — the detector ran over enough material and genuinely found nothing. That is a result, not a failure.
• "Not measurable on this microphone" — see the microphone section below.
• "Only measured in English" — the word-level measurements use an English lexicon. The acoustic ones keep working in any language.

Microphones, AirPods and headsets

Tap the Mic chooser on the Rehearse screen to pick an input. A few notes worth knowing:

• Articulance keeps your baselines separate per microphone family. A headset sits centimetres from your mouth and a phone on the table does not, so comparing across the two would show you a change that was the equipment rather than you.
• For the same reason, loudness-derived measurements — your volume range and the "trailing off" finding — are declined on anything other than the built-in microphone. The app says so rather than printing a number it does not trust.
• Pace, pitch, pauses and the word measurements are unaffected and keep working on any input.
• If a recording fails to start after switching to a Bluetooth headset, the Mic chooser is right there on the failure screen — switch back to the built-in microphone and try again.

Recordings and playback

• There is nothing to play back on an older session. Rehearsal audio is kept on this phone by default, so most sessions can be replayed from their report. If Keep audio for replay was off when a rehearsal was recorded, its audio was erased when that report closed — and turning the setting on today cannot give last week's rehearsal an audio file it never had.
• Playback sounds quiet. Articulance records with iOS's measurement mode, which switches off automatic gain control on purpose — how loud you were is one of the things being measured. The app raises the level for listening; the stored file keeps the real one.
• Getting your recordings out. Files → On My iPhone → Articulance. They are ordinary WAV files.
• Deleting. Deleting a rehearsal deletes its retained audio. Settings → Delete all sessions removes rehearsals and drills, preserving interviews, warm-ups and scripts. Orphan cleanup waits if an unreadable interview might reference a recording. Warm-up deletion and backup/export limits are explained in the privacy policy.

The app was interrupted mid-rehearsal

Articulance checkpoints the rehearsal while recording. On relaunch it attempts to recover the last readable checkpoint and repair unfinished audio. The last unsaved interval may be missing, and recovery requires a readable checkpoint and enough storage. Deal with that offer before starting a new recording — a fresh take needs the same slot. Interviews in The Room are saved when you end them; an interview interrupted before that is not kept.

Purchases and refunds

• One purchase, everything included: Articulance is a one-time purchase on the App Store — there is no subscription, no in-app purchase and nothing to restore beyond re-downloading the app with the Apple Account you bought it with.
• Billing and refunds: Apple handles all billing — we cannot process a refund ourselves. Refunds: reportaproblem.apple.com.
• Family devices: the app installs on any device signed in to the purchasing Apple Account; measurements and history are per-device by design.

Accessibility

Articulance is built to work at every Dynamic Type size, including the accessibility sizes, and its primary actions are checked at the largest size before each release. Reduce Motion is honoured. If you hit something that does not work with the text size or the assistive technology you use, please tell us — those reports get priority.
