Privacy Policy

Short version: Articulance processes your speech on your device and never uploads it. You control any exports or messages you choose to send. There is no account, advertising or tracking. If you contact us, section 7 explains the support information you choose to send.

1. Who this covers

Articulance is an iOS app published by MakerPortal (App Store ID 6800468033). This policy describes the app and this website. It was last updated on September 9, 2026.

2. Your speech is processed on your device

Speech processing happens locally:

• Measurement. Pitch, level, pauses, pace, emphasis, phrasing, articulation and the presence indices are computed on your device from the microphone signal as it arrives.
• Transcription. Speech is transcribed on-device by Apple's SpeechTranscriber. Your words are not sent to Apple's servers or ours.
• Coaching and interviews. Session report notes are assembled locally from your measurements and verified words. The Room and executive debrief can also use on-device Apple Foundation Models when available; fixed questions and evidence-only answers remain available without that model. The Room’s neural voices are bundled with the app.

Articulance provides no speech upload service — no developer-operated backend, no analytics, no telemetry, no tracking SDK, no crash reporter, no advertising identifier, and no audio upload service anywhere in the app.

We word that precisely rather than saying "the app makes no network requests at all", because the latter is not true and we are not going to print a claim that is false in a state the app can reach. See section 5.

3. Temporary and kept recordings

Each rehearsal writes one recording, into the app's own sandboxed container on your device, while the microphone is open. It exists so that the report you are handed straight afterwards can play the exact second a coaching note is about — a note that says "at 1:23 your level fell away" and cannot let you hear 1:23 is asking to be believed.

Rehearsal and Room answer recordings are kept on this phone by default. A notice explains this before your first recording under the setting. An existing choice to keep recordings off stays off. Recordings use iOS file protection, are excluded from device backups, and are never uploaded.

You can turn off Keep audio for replay in Settings at any time. While it is on, rehearsal audio is moved into the app's Recordings folder when filed, and Room answer audio is kept there while the interview runs. With keeping off, rehearsal audio is deleted when its fresh report closes and Room answer audio is not saved. Turning the setting off does not delete recordings already kept. Either way:

• They use iOS file protection. Files and the sharing controls let you explicitly give a copy to another app or recipient.
• They are excluded from iCloud and iTunes device backups, so a recording does not travel to a new phone with your history.
• Articulance never uploads them. Copies you export are managed by the destination you choose.
• You can retrieve or delete kept recordings yourself through Files → On My iPhone → Articulance.
• Deleting a rehearsal deletes its retained recording. “Delete all sessions” removes rehearsals and re-take drills, while preserving interview recordings. The orphan cleanup waits if an unreadable interview record might still reference audio.
• Keeping recordings is a preference you control, on or off, at any time. Nothing about it is gated.

Separately, and regardless of that setting, the app writes a working checkpoint of the rehearsal in progress to support recovery after a crash or force-quit. That checkpoint lives in the same sandbox. On the next launch the app attempts to recover the last readable checkpoint; the last unsaved interval may be missing, and recovery needs enough storage. The checkpoint is deleted once the session is saved. Interviews in The Room are saved when you end them; an interview interrupted before that is not kept.

4. What is stored on your device

The app stores the following locally. Articulance does not transmit these records; you can export copies yourself:

• Your session records — the measurements, the transcript, the coaching notes and their timestamps.
• Your scripts, occasions, practice focus, re-take drills and interview questions and answers.
• Your warm-up measurements and any saved vowel-space drawings, in the VoiceChecks folder. Warm-up audio is not saved.
• Your profile: a display name and an avatar, if you choose to set them. The photo is written to Application Support rather than Documents, specifically so it does not appear in the Files listing the app exposes for exporting recordings.
• App settings, in UserDefaults. This is a required-reason API and is declared in the app's privacy manifest under reason CA92.1 — this app's own settings, read back by this app only, in no shared suite or app group.

Your session records are included in your own device backup, deliberately, so that your history survives moving to a new phone. That backup is yours and Apple's — it does not come to us, and it cannot, because we operate nothing for it to come to. Recordings are the exception: they are excluded from backup, so audio never travels that way.

Deleting the app removes its local container. It does not erase an existing device backup or copies you have exported; manage those in your backup settings or the destination app.

5. Network access

Speech processing needs no developer service. These actions can use a network:

• The App Store, which is where you buy and download Articulance. Apple handles the transaction end to end; we never see your Apple Account, your name, your email or your payment details, and nothing about your speech is part of that exchange.
• Apple's on-device speech model. The first time transcription is needed for your language, iOS may download Apple's speech-recognition assets from Apple. Nothing you have said, and no text of yours, is part of that download. Once the assets are installed no network is needed for speech processing.
• Opening a link. Privacy, Terms, Support and artwork-credit links open the destination in your browser. The website and destination provider handle those requests.

Support messages use your mail provider or the website form described in section 7. A share sheet, Files export or clipboard copy goes to a destination you choose; that destination may sync or transmit it. The website also loads fonts from Google Fonts, whose servers receive the requests needed to serve them.

Apple's own handling of your purchase is covered by Apple's privacy policy, not this one.

6. Permissions the app asks for

Exactly two, and both are asked for at the moment they are needed:

• Microphone — to hear the rehearsal you started. Nothing is captured when you are not recording; the app deliberately does not hold the audio session open at launch.
• Speech recognition — to transcribe on-device, so a coaching note can quote exactly what you said and when.

The app asks for no photo library permission. If you set a profile picture, iOS's own picker runs outside the app and hands back only the single image you chose.

7. If you contact us

Support correspondence is information you choose to send us. When you submit it, your name, email address and message are sent to our email provider (Resend) purely to deliver that message to our inbox, and we keep it only as long as it takes to answer you. It is never sold, never used for marketing and never added to a mailing list.

The app's own "contact support" screen composes a message in Apple's mail composer and sends nothing until you tap send. The diagnostics switch starts on and can be turned off. “Show me exactly what that is” displays the full block, and the mail draft displays it again before you send. It includes device and app versions, speech and model availability, locale and any changed Room voice selections. It includes no recording, transcript, session identifier or profile name.

8. Children

Articulance is not directed at children under 13. The app requires no account and does not send us rehearsal data. The only information we may hold is support correspondence that someone chooses to send under section 7; we do not knowingly collect it from a child.

9. Your rights (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA and friends)

These regimes give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data a company holds about you. The app gives us none: there is no account, no profile on a server, no analytics record and no audio in our possession. The only information we may hold is support correspondence that you choose to send under section 7.

You can export records through Files and delete individual rehearsals and interviews in the app. “Delete all sessions” keeps interviews, warm-ups, scripts and profile information. Delete a warm-up from its record in the warm-up archive. Deleting the app removes all local records. Existing backups and exported copies must be removed separately. We do not sell your personal information.

For the messages described in section 7, write to engineer@makersportal.com and we will delete the correspondence on request.

10. App Store privacy label

Articulance's App Store privacy label declares Data Not Collected and no tracking. Optional support correspondence is described in section 7; it is used only to answer your request. The privacy manifest shipped inside the app declares no tracking and no collected-data types. It also declares the three required-reason API categories the app uses: UserDefaults for app preferences (CA92.1), file timestamps for reading attributes of files in the app's own container (C617.1), and system boot time for elapsed-time measurement (35F9.1). These declarations are kept deliberately in step with the app and this page.

11. Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Because we have no way to contact you — which is rather the point — please check back here if it matters to you.
